Commercial gym equipment is much higher quality than the equipment that is usually manufactured and sold for home use. This is because they are built to be used by several different people every day as opposed to only being used by one or two people every two or three days. Higher amounts of tension and weight limits are also standard on commercial equipment, whereas they can be more difficult or expensive to purchase for home machines.
As commercial gym equipment goes by higher standards than what is normally available for personal use, they are also much more expensive. For a gym owner a few thousand dollars for one machine can be a reasonable price, but for someone who would like to casually exercise at home to save time and money by working out at home it can seem outrageous.
These commercial grade machines can be found at specialty manufacturers and retailers, never at any department store. When department stores do carry exercise equipment, they carry personal use equipment. Commercial use equipment must be purchased from vendors dedicated to the selling of fitness products and machines. Residential and commercial models have different standards -- even if a product at a department store claims that it is appropriate gym usage that does not mean it is true. Not purchasing from a trusted commercial gym equipment vendor can put gym frequenters at risk.
Used equipment can be purchased from other gyms, though only when they are looking to change their current equipment out for newer models. While this may not be an optimum choice for some, it is a good way to get truly professional grade equipment at a lower costs. Starting out entrepreneur gym owners should consider this a viable option to start out with and then look for newer units once they have an established client base.
New gym owners can't be but so picky, but established ones can. Word of mouth can lead to promising products, but the best way to find out what machines will be best to change to would be to read fitness magazines and websites. Invaluable information can be found in other people's experience, and exercise equipment is something that needs to be high quality, especially if they are going to be for gym use.
Finding quality gym equipment is not difficult with the right resources, though it's not possible to go to the local department store and pick up a few machines and use them in a gym setting. There is too much risk of those machines breaking down with frequent and heavy use for them to be an option. Commercial gym equipment is worth every penny, as long as it is used as frequently and for as long as they are intended.
